2012 SSA Changes

Posted on February 14th, 2012

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, that the 2012 social security wage base will be $110,100, up from $106,800 where it had been set for the past three years. As in prior years, there is no limit to the wages subject to the Medicare tax; therefore all covered wages are still subject to the 1.45% tax.

February 22, 2012, Congress passed the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012. The provisions of this act will include the continuation of the employee social security tax rate of 4.2% for the remainder of 2012. It was set to expire on March 1, 2012. Per the IRS, the reduction in the employees pay will have no future effect on their Social Security benefits.
